Nanoco advocated a comprehensive ban on cadmium in TVs, monitors and other products
German Institute of Ecology (Öko Institute) recently published evaluation report recommends that the EU extend the exemption of cadmium quantum dots in a television monitor, but it called for an end as soon as possible the use of cadmium in LED lighting. This report led to cadmium-free quantum dots and nanomaterials R & D and manufacturer Nanoco Group questioned. In this regard, the European Commission, European Parliament and EU Member States have indicated that the report will assess the German Institute of Ecology make a decision.
Nanoco chief executive Michael Edelman said the purpose of the RoHS directive is to prohibit the use of hazardous substances in Europe. According to these findings is not clear recommendation to continue the use of cadmium, to the positive side is misleading, at worst aspect of irresponsibility. He further analysis, innovative, high-performance production and energy saving TVs and monitors have been able to use cadmium-free quantum dots. Therefore, any exemption for cadmium set of practices to become completely unnecessary.
Cadmium is one of six highly toxic substances in the RoHS Directive banned from electrical and electronic equipment. RoHS directive so far, 12-year-old, designed to protect human health and the environment, and to promote the recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment. The RoHS Directive Cadmium is defined as the most dangerous toxic heavy metals, therefore the upper limit is 10 times lower than the permissible concentration of mercury and lead.
May 2015, the European Parliament votes to 618 pairs of 33 poor rejected the European Commission's "Enabling Act", the bill requires the TV and monitor the use of cadmium exemption period to July 2018. Therefore, the EU is responsible for formulating environmental policy of the European Commission DG Environment (Directorate-General for Environment, DG Environment) commissioned by the German Institute of Ecology related investigation, and ultimately make the report raise questions.
Although the report notes that the market has been to replace the existing technology of cadmium-free products, but also in a variety of test conditions, performance standards of both technologies was no significant difference, but the report did not make clear conclusions, and whether the the EU decided to extend the grace period left. Because of equivocation, and therefore raise questions of Nanoco. Nanoco hope that the European Commission, Member States and the European Parliament can fulfill the responsibility of maintaining the RoHS Directive, not to slight performance differences hinder the progress of toxic and hazardous substances to prevent harm to the environment in Europe.
Nanoco findings, recommendations of the German Institute of Ecology has a lot of controversy, particularly in the report did not mention when the color gamut increase or decrease power consumption to what extent, RoHS exemption can give, and different devices may have different specifications such as consumer and medical diagnosis TV screen.
Nanoco that the ultimate purpose of the RoHS Directive is completely disabled in the future of controlled substances, including cadmium, thereby extending the waiver is clearly contrary to this purpose. Many market cadmium-free quantum dot television technology has reached the performance requirements of the standard, and can replace any TV using cadmium, therefore, the exemption of cadmium should be terminated as soon as possible.
